Mainroad Contracting (Lower Mainland) has won this year’s Deputy Minister’s Contractor of the Year Award of Excellence in safety innovation, for its High Speed Traffic Control Training.
“Congratulations to Mainroad Contracting for this well-deserved award,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. “Safety is the most important aspect of any project and I commend Mainroad for recognizing the value of striving to make improvements that benefit staff, the company, the industry, and ultimately the public who use our roads and highways.”
The High Speed Traffic Control Training is a two-day in-class and practical training course to promote a culture of safety while working in high speed traffic. The primary focus of the training is on driver behaviour that is unique to the specific tasks of construction and maintenance workers. The course increases situational awareness for the many subtle nuances that can dramatically affect a work zone layout and safety.
Some of the benefits of the training to industry are better communication between management, crews and subcontractors; more effective and detailed job planning; better hazard assessment and new mitigation techniques, and increased safety for public road users.
The Deputy Minister’s Contractor of the Year Award of Excellence recognizes construction and maintenance companies demonstrating excellence in the categories of grading, paving, bridges and structures, safety innovation, and highway maintenance work throughout the province. The 14th annual awards were hosted by the B.C. Road Builders & Heavy Construction Association on Friday, Dec. 2 in Victoria.
The other finalist in the safety innovation category was JPW Road and Bridge Inc. for its Portable Vacuum Hole Excavator.
