Mainroad Mid-Island Contracting LP

Mainroad Mid-Island Contracting headquarters and primary works yard is located in Parksville with supporting works yards in Duke Point, Port Alberni, Ucluelet, and the Gulf Islands of Gabriola and Lasqueti.

Mainroad is responsible for servicing the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure’s 10 year contract for Service Area 2 effective September 1, 2018 covering Central Vancouver Island roughly between the communities of Chemainus (North Cowichan) and Bowser (Regional District of Nanaimo).

Within the boundaries of the Service Area, there are:

Two major ferry terminals

Highway 1 at Departure Bay
Highway 19 at Duke Point

Two gulf islands
We service:

Gabriola Island
Lasqueti Island

The southern boundary of Service Area 2 adjoins Service Area 1 on Highway 1, and the northern boundary of Service Area 2 adjoins Service Area 3 at Cook Creek Road on Highway 19 and Highway 19A. Trans-Canada Highway 1 and Highway 19 are the only major numbered routes running south to north on Vancouver Island.

Service Area 2 encompasses the cities of North Cowichan (Chemainus Village), Ladysmith, Nanaimo, Lantzville, Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Port Alberni, Bamfield (unincorporated), Ucluelet and Tofino. Along with these cities, there are four regional districts including Cowichan Valley Regional District, Regional District of Nanaimo, Alberni Clayoquot Regional District and Powell River Regional District.

Service Area 2 has approximately 3,259 lane kilometres of maintained roads (which includes approximately 936 lane kilometres of numbered highways), 4 rest areas, approximately 194 bridge/culvert structures, 4 pedestrian underpasses, 2 pedestrian overpasses, 20 sign bridges and approximately 56 retaining wall structures.

While Vancouver Island enjoys the most temperate winter climate in British Columbia, it is susceptible to seasonal wind, rain, and snow storms. With weather that can fluctuate over short distances and change suddenly depending on the local terrain, Mainroad frequently monitors weather forecasts and road conditions to prepare equipment and crews well in advance of a weather event.

The company shares the same geographic region as our heavy equipment and civil construction company G&E Contracting LP, Raylec Power LP, SPR Traffic Services LP, as well as salt depots for Mainroad Maintenance Products LP.
