Be prepared for Winter Driving Conditions | Winter isn’t over yet.

Winter isn’t over yet and driving in it can be  treacherous.   Mainroad reminds motorists and residents to  be prepared for winter driving conditions and the unpredictability of the winter season.

WATCH FOR BLACK ICE.    Slow down when approaching icy areas such as shady areas, bridges and overpasses as these sections of road freeze sooner than others in cold weather.   Watch for “black ice”, areas of the road with a thin, almost invisible coating of  ice as it can cause your vehicle to suddenly lose traction, braking and cornering control.

Prepare your vehicle for winter weather and before heading out, visit www.drivebc.ca for current road conditions and weather forecasts.   We strongly recommend the public use this website prior to travel in inclement weather.   Webcams are available for the public to see real-time conditions throughout our service areas.    Mainroad maintains  24-hour hotlines for reporting of accidents, unsafe road conditions and road kill.   The call center is used to update DriveBC, dispatch additional personnel and record public communication as required.

Mainroad winter operations are in effect.   During a snow event, Mainroad has a full complement of winter operators plus mechanical support working every shift 24/7.   Mainroad uses three materials for winter road maintenance: winter sand, salt brine and salt.   The use of a specific material is determined by forecast and actual weather conditions.

One of Mainroad’s key strategic initiatives is public safety.   We all have family and friends using the roads we maintain and our crews are proud of the work they do to ensure that happens.   Help our crews by maintaining a safe following distance when approaching highway maintenance vehicles.   When you attempt to pass, you put yourself, the truck operator, and the driving public at risk.

All Mainroad Service Areas are actively promoting the Shift into Winter campaign, a joint provincial initiative supported by organizations committed to improving the safety of drivers during the winter months.   Pick up winter driving tips at www.shiftintowinter.ca and follow our campaign by listening for tips on local radio stations during traffic reports.
