Shift Into Winter

Shift Into WinterTo address the issue of winter driving safety, a group of road safety stakeholders from across the province formed the Winter Driving Safety Alliance in 2006.  As a member of the BC Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association, Mainroad is a Winter Driving Safety Alliance partner.  One of the group’s initiatives is “Shift into Winter“, a public awareness campaign designed to inform BC drivers about the importance of safe winter driving.

Winter causes dangerous conditions that require preparation, knowledge and skill to navigate safely. Snow, ice, slush, rain, and fog affect driving conditions in different ways.  When winter is upon us, the campaign is a reminder for motorists and residents to be prepared for winter driving conditions and the unpredictability of the season.

Shift into Winter typically runs October through March during which time Mainroad actively promotes the campaign.  We purchase Shift into Winter branded radio and print ads within the service area regions we maintain targeting motorists and residents.

Is your impatience a safety concern?  Here’s why you shouldn’t pass a snow plow on the highway:

Mainroad is a visible supporter of the campaign:

  • We host winter driving awareness events.
  • We distribute winter driving tips during stakeholder communications.
  • Our crews visit local elementary schools with a plow truck to teach children about winter operations and plow truck safety.
  • Follow us @mainroadteam on Twitter for event information and frequent winter driving tips

Winter weather challenges our driving skills.  Make sure you’re up to the test.  The following winter driving tips could save your life when out on the road.  Download free winter driving tip sheets to share with family, friends and colleagues:

Be Prepared | Learn how to drive in winter conditions

Start by asking yourself this: Do you really need to go?  In winter, sometimes the best defensive driving is staying at home.  Can your trip be delayed or switched to another day?  If not, the best defense is to prepare yourself.

Prepare yourself for winter conditions

Before heading out, visit for current road conditions, weather forecasts, and real-time conditions via Drive BC’s webcams.  Please report accidents, unsafe road conditions and road kill to Mainroad’s 24-hour hotline.  This hotline is used to update DriveBC, dispatch additional personnel and record public communication as required.

As part of our sponsorship of the WHL Victoria Royals, we partner with Kal Tire to host an annual winter driving awareness in Victoria.
